Preferences and Arabian parts

Hello all.

I'm still evaluating Kairon at the moment and I've run into a problem with the preferences file and the calculation of Fortuna.

In short; I set up a new preference file based on the default one and changed the selected file in Kairon>preferences>defaults. I then set up some charts from a text book and noticed that Fortuna was incorrectly calculated for one chart only. I checked the preferences file and it seemed that "allow flip" was checked and I only want a daytime calculation. So I modified it (or so I thought) by selecting Fortuna, unchecking "allow flip" and then selecting ok. Instead I ended up with 2 Fortunas listed in the "loaded arabic parts" list. The first still calculates Fortuna incorrectly and the second appears as 'a5' on the chart and is also wrong.

Note: The formula for Fortuna is correct (ASC+Moon-Sun) and its only this one chart out of 8 which is wrong. It makes no difference whether I change the default preferences file back to the default one I still end up with 2 Fortunas. I had a look at the files in a text editor and can't find where/or how this change is listed. I've also tried closing everything and restarting Kairon with no luck.

So, from an evaluation point of view, I'm getting a little frustrated as to how to modify these Arabian parts but more importantly, as the calculation was incorrect once how can I be sure there aren't other glitches. I only picked this one up by comparing the Kairon chart against the one in the text book and then working out the correct position of Fortuna manually (the book was correct).

Any advice on how to solve this problem and some reassurance that this software works correctly would be appreciated.

Regards

to change the part of fortune you should not have chosen "Add new item..." but "change item..." in the modify section. But if you add other items, just see to it, that their names differ from the old ones, to avoid confusion. You can make your chart clearer also, by going through the styles tutorial at kairon.cc to learn how to add specific symbols to points you invent by yourself.

You have two basic choices to add an arabic part.
a) only adding it to the list to the left
b) adding it to the list to the right without adding it to the list to the left
in case of b) the point will show itself at the bottom of the list and you can then select it and add it to the list on the left within any preference file you wish to have it in.

You might consider a name lilke: "POF noflip", so you can more easily reallize, that it then will ever be either exactly in place of the part of fortune or in place of part of spirit.

Astrology is all about time. Like the months of the year have their specific timely quality, so also have the hours of the day. Like summer and winter are core polarites, so are day and night, the day ruled by the sun and the night ruled by the moon (- actually the rule is even more sophisticated, asigning specific hours to each and every planet). Even in everydaylife: What sounds well in a candle light dinner may be entirely displaced during the business hours and vice versa. These differences are the very heart of astrology. The more differences we are able to consider and put them in one line together, the more subtlish our interpretation becomes.
The Ascendant is the keypoint to distinguish sunrise from sunset in the chart, and if any part might be sensitive to ascendant, sun and moon, this is the part of fortune and the part of spirit wich both only consist of ascendant, sun and moon.
When flipping occurs, both take the place of each other.
i feel it is very confusing to drop one of these points by flattening down the calculation of the other, but i have put no restriction into Kairon, so that people can do their own research without being blocked by the software or by traditon or by my own opinion.

So feel free and perhaps you may even be right to call Al Biruni wrong, but it would be of public interest to also explain why you say so in public. For a reasonable discussion to quote "A Book" is a bit too little, though.

It is core part of "netiquette" (rules followed on the internet and in using forums), not to restart a topic with the same question but to add that question as a reply or indepthening query to the other one. (please see Tutorial dreaming and the Arabic Parts five lines below your topic.) :)

Kilian,

Thanks for your reply. Point taken about the previous thread - sorry.

So far the program is great to work with however, whilst I welcome the flexibility you've built into Kairon, can I respectfully suggest that for a new user the subtleties of altering the Arabian Parts is not all that clear. For example, you use the word 'Modify' at the top right and then a "Change selected entry" button at the bottom so its not clear which is the correct option.
However, if I select a Part in the full list and then choose the "Change selected part" button, this also brings it's name into the text box above the 'OK' button so it only seems natural to make the changes required and select 'OK'; which is what I did. What I did not expect is that this would create a new version of the Part in the checklist on the left but leave the original Part in the full list unchanged. Plus, I did also try adding a 'test' Part with a different name but it doesn't appear in the full list only in the check box list on the left. I also tried highlighting a Part in the full list and selecting '-' (remove the selected item) which does indeed remove the selected item from the full list but still leaves it in the check box list.

Which leads me on to another question: How do I get rid of these unwanted duplicate Parts in the checkbox list on the left?

I certainly don't wish to criticise your intentions only to point out that coming to this part of the program as a newbie its not as user friendly or should I say 'idiot proof' as it might be.

----------------
The debate about reversing Fortuna at night is always rumbling on, lets just say that for my purposes one way of looking at Fortuna is as a way of marking the phase of the Moon; its on the Ascendant at the New Moon and the Descendant at the Full Moon and works its way anticlockwise around the chart in between the two. As John Frawley states "The Moon's phase does not change as soon as it gets dark." The other reason I don't change it is because it works just fine in daytime mode.

Thanks again,
Magwitch

if you don't wish to replace an entry by a new one, just replace it with an empty string (select an item from the popup menue, leave the above entry fields empty and click the upper ok, then deselect the checkbox that has no description.

thank you for your explanations on the fortuna subject. i think any debates could be omittted, if we had as many names as methods :-) (different calculation should lead to different interpretation and to different name as well)
